During Queensland Mental Health Week Bundaberg residents will be encouraged to take time to find happiness through enjoying an arts trail walk (with/or without a pet dog).

The original concept name is ‘Found!’ and the event focuses on what makes us happy. It will provide an opportunity for locals to meet therapy dogs, enjoy looking at artworks of dogs by school children and support local emerging artists!

Who doesn’t feel happy when they see a friendly pet dog? Dog therapy has been proven to lower blood pressure when we see, smile at or pat a friendly therapy dog, look at photographs and artworks of dogs/pets.

The Bundaberg Community Art Trail Exhibition is planned from August to October and will celebrate the happiness dogs and other pets bring to our mental health. The aim is to encourage isolated individuals to leave their homes for physical wellbeing (exercise in the form of a short walk) and mental wellbeing (socialising within the community).

Community members are encouraged to bring their dog for a walk on Sundays, joining volunteer guides in Bourbong Street, and follow a trail of artworks (a phone application is being created to act as a map).

Since COVID-19 isolation, struggling local emerging artists need opportunities to display their work in public places. All artworks will be exhibited in either the BRAG gallery, the shop windows of participating businesses or displayed in empty shops that will be turned into galleries by both professional, emerging artists and school children.

School children have been invited to enter an artwork of their dog (displaying the happiness a dog/pet brings to them). Artworks will be displayed in a student art prize and exhibition during Queensland Mental Health Week.

All exhibitions are free to enter being inclusive to all community. To encourage participation, a free sausage sizzle is planned and will be dependent on grant funding.

There will be information and banners on display from local support groups. Lifeline and Bundaberg Regional Suicide Prevention Network volunteers will be available to chat with community members in an informal open-air environment, giving access to a listening ear and support.
