Ferny Grove State High School

Queensland Mental Health Week at Ferny Grove State High School will be run over a week.

There will be morning activities and daily messages in form classes. This will include mindfulness activities for the students to participate in, as well as small educational messages about gaining access to the student support services within school and resources available externally.

An event will be run at Ferny Grove State High School for all the staff and students. It will include a football game, a barbeque, and a whole lesson dedicated to educating the students on mental health with practical ways of how to look after their mental health.

On the Monday of Queensland Mental Health Week the staff will be gifted Tim Tams, a coffee voucher and a gratitude message by the students.

The Tuesday will include the inaugural Chappy Cup; this was postponed from the Chaplaincy week due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Chappy Cup is a touch football game that involves staff competing against year 12 students. In the past, all students and staff get very involved and cheer on their team. This outdoor activity promotes healthy exercise and a fun and inviting environment.

On Wednesday there will be a 70-minute lesson, which will educate the students on what mental health looks like, how to preserve good mental health and equip the students with the appropriate support and at home exercises (e.g. breathing, outdoor activities etc).

Thursday will include a guest speaker during assembly who will assist in promoting healthy mental health and what to do when the staff or students aren’t in the best mental state.

Finally, on Friday there will be a BBQ, picnic mats, and entertainment in our outdoor common area to finish off the week.

Through collaboratively working with staff and the wider school community, the school will promote the daily activities and photos of students participating them via the school’s Facebook page and newsletters. This promotion will allow parents/guardians to also access resources that have been provided to students, as well as mental health resources from sources such as Headspace to assist and educate parents on how they can help their children.
